Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of the Pet Rescue and Reunification team! This team is modeled after the Sonoma and Napa Fires team created in the aftermath of the Tubbs fire. We have taken that model and set up new teams in the subsequent Carr Fire, Mendocino Complex Fire and Camp Fires.
Each team is made up of local community members and is a long haul effort of at least a year. We are here to set you up for success and then will retreat to a consulting and support effort while you take the reins. This is YOUR team.
There are many equally important ways you can volunteer: as part of the online Administration Team, our Matching Team, our Trapping Team or as a Feeding Station Monitor.
The Administration Team has set up a huge database of missing and found pets with information received from Facebook posts or e-mails from owners. This information includes photos of pets, pet information, owner information, and consent from owners to access their property. Maintaining this database is critical to our operations, and gathering information from owners is key to reunification.
The "Matching" Team spends endless hours online matching photos of lost to found pets, reaching out to owners, and reuniting the pets. They are also available at a moment’s notice to the field crew when a cat is trapped, often resulting in a reunification within hours. These members have a keen eye for details and are google spreadsheet savvy.
Once our team is allowed in to the affected area, we set up feeding stations. Our Feeding Station Monitors refill these stations and monitor them daily (with notes updated in our spreadsheet). In addition, staging sheds are set up where supplies of food, bowls, traps, etc. are located for easy access to the crew (although you may find that your trunk will soon be stocked with these on a permanent basis!).
Once activity is established, trail cameras are set up to determine who is coming to feed. With cats targeted our Trapping Team then start trapping.
This is a team effort with organizational structure. There are procedures for all aspects of it as well as lots of documentation (database, scheduling calendars, feeding station, camera and traps location and status update spreadsheets, etc). We utilize mobile technology (i.e. our cell phones) via Slack and Zoom applications to keep in touch at all times online.
This effort is huge and will impact your life in the most amazing way. It may involve hours of hard work, but the first time you see the joy that a reunification brings to the people who have lost everything, you will be hooked! You will also meet amazing, selfless people along the way and create some lifelong friendships. And of course, all of it is for this goal: to take on the piece of finding lost pets for the owners so that they can focus on all of the other things that they need to do during a very stressful time.
